salt & pepper
packaging design concept. Years ago, salt and pepper were of tremendous high worth. Designated as „black“ and „white gold“, the today almost unimposing appearing goods were deprived of the poor. Only the wealthy social elite was given the privilege to use these valuable substances. Today, the situation is rather different. Spices have become more affordable to everybody. But not only the price has changed: Pepper and salt are not necessarily considered as precious commodities anymore. This matter of fact exerts influence on creative aspects regarding the packages of these two flavourings. Overburdened design creations, little valuable appearing package materials. Briefly: Package design not reflecting the character of the „golden“ goods. More briefly: Package design under worth. These considerations have led us – two information design students from Graz, Austria – to a point where we decided to make a change in package design for salt and pepper sold in trade. Puristic shapes, reduced and clear typography and the only two colors really needed to be able to associate package with content – black and white.
